Are you looking to relocate to a warm and sunny tropical paradise? The Dominican Republic’s citizenship by investment program and residency by investment program allows foreigners to obtain an instant residency permit when investing in a property in the DR. If you want to learn more about the Dominican Republic’s Citizenship-by-Investment Program or Residency-by-Investment Program, continue reading!

Why the Dominican Republic?

The DR’s beautiful weather, sandy beaches and sunny days all year round make it the most visited destination in the Caribbean. Many North Americans visit the Dominican Republic for tourism and cruise arrivals every year, and some even choose to live in the DR! Some of the reasons why the Dominican Republic attracts many visitors on a yearly basis are:

  • The availability of asset protection for ex-pats
  • Low costs on second passports
  • No taxes on foreign income
  • Rapidly expanding real estate market

Citizenship-by-Investment Eligibility Requirements

As a real estate investor in the Dominican Republic, you will automatically qualify for citizenship when you buy approved real estate in the DR. In order to be eligible; you must invest in a property of no less than 200,000 USD and maintain ownership of the property for a minimum of three years. Once you’ve purchased your property, you and your family are eligible to apply to the Dominica Economic Citizenship Program. When you have successfully become a Dominica citizen, you can then pass your nationality on to future generations by descent.

Residency-by-Investment Eligibility Requirements

If you’re not looking to obtain dual citizenship and are only interested in living in the DR, you can apply for the Residency by Investment Program instead. There are two steps to becoming a resident of the DR:

  1. Apply for a temporary residency in the DR (valid for one year)
  2. Apply for a permanent residency in the DR (valid for two years)

To qualify for a residency by investment, you must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Good health
  • Sufficient financial means
  • Clean background check

Once you’ve obtained the information above, you can apply for a residency.

Housing

The number one priority for anyone relocating to a new country is securing, safe, affordable, and comfortable housing. Thanks to the overall low cost of living in the Dominican Republic, purchasing a dream villa can easily be done on a wide variety of budgets, with Casa Linda offering exceptional floor plans that start as low as $199,000 USD. Utilities

As with your current living situation, you can expect to pay for standard utilities when arriving in the Dominican. However, unlike at home, you’ll spend significantly less! Basic utilities like water, electricity and garbage are about $60 USD a month, and broadband internet connect averages around $50 monthly as well.

The one thing you’ll kind in mind is that, in spite of the DR’s strong infrastructure, power outages are a common occurrence in the DR, so purchasing a backup generator will go a long way towards minimizing any disruptions.

Food and Groceries

One of the best parts of moving to the DR is that you can expect to spend far less on food, both for groceries, as well as when eating out. Thanks to a bounty of fresh produce and food options on the island, your weekly average for groceries will typically be much lower than you are used to. For those who love to eat out, you can relish the fact that dining is generally much cheaper as well!

Healthcare

Alongside housing, healthcare is one of the biggest concerns for expatriates. You’ll be pleased to learn that the Dominican Republic has exceptional healthcare that is incredibly accessible, as well as affordable, meaning you’ll never have to worry about your quality of care. With state-of-the-art facilities and services available in both English and Spanish, you can rest easy knowing you’ll always have the help you need when it matters most.

Read on to learn more about 3 major financial points to consider, as well as what you can expect while living on the island.

Plan For Success

Before we dive into three major areas for financial consideration, it’s worth mentioning that the most important step you can take towards moving abroad is to have an open and honest conversation with your spouse and financial advisor, especially if you’ve not been on top of longterm planning prior. Knowing where you stand will make it easier to plan ahead with confidence, as well as have the information you need to apply for long-term residency.
