How to Plan Your Move to the Dominican Republic

How to Plan Your Move to the Dominican Republic

Are you planning to move to the Dominican Republic soon? Great idea! The Dominican Republic is a beautiful country with many beaches and sunny weather almost year-round. But at Casa Linda, we understand that moving can be stressful. Between packing, lodging, and paperwork, there is so much potential for things to slip through the cracks! Below we outline three of the most important aspects of moving to the Dominican Republic (DR). Keep reading to learn how to plan your DR move, or check out more information on DR living.

How to Pack

To know what you need to pack, you must know what the weather is like in the Dominican Republic from season to season. Luckily, the DR has glorious weather all of the time, with only a short rainy season. No snow, hurricanes, or tornadoes to worry about! The average temperature here is a perfect 28 degrees Celsius almost year-round: you’ll only need your favorite summer outfits and a sweater or two to survive.

Here’s a quick list of the things you should bring with you:

  • Toiletries
  • Medications and prescriptions
  • Summer clothing
  • Bathing suits
  • Passports
  • Birth certificates
  • Insurance policies
  • Real estate documents

Remember to pack your travel documents and a tranquilo attitude: anything else you forget in your move to the Dominican Republic can be bought here. The cost of living is much lower here than in the US or Canada, so your dollar will go further.

What Can I Buy With $10 USD in the Dominican Republic?

What Can I Buy With $10 USD in the Dominican Republic?

The Dominican Republic is the top Caribbean tourist destination. Gorgeous beaches and perfect weather year-round make it easy to see why! With a low cost of living in the Dominican Republic (DR), be prepared to spend less for more. No matter your destination, at Casa Linda, we believe knowing how far your money will take you is good practice. Let’s look at what $10 USD could get you in the DR compared to the United States.

The Value of $10 USD in the United States

The Dominican Republic uses the Dominican Peso (RD$), which sits at a conversion rate of about $1 USD to RD$54 in mid-2023. Please note that the Dominican Peso is different from the Mexican Peso. Using the conversion rate, $10 USD would be RD$545. For reference, in the US, $10 could get you one fast food meal, two cappuccinos to share with a friend, or a pack of cigarettes. The cost of living in the Dominican Republic is much lower than in the United States, which benefits those in Canada or the United States looking for the perfect retirement country.

What You Could Buy in the Dominican Republic

We’ve discussed the value of $10 USD, but what can you actually buy with that? If you’re looking for something to do in the evenings, you can get yourself two theater tickets for yourself and a friend, or you could take them out to a low-budget restaurant for a date. Say you want more of a night in: head over to the nearest liquor store and get yourself an entire bottle of mid-range liquor. For the coffee drinkers, you could get yourself around nine shots of espresso with change left over.

As you can see, the cost of living in the Dominican Republic is lower, and with a better view, stretching your money to go further than it would in a city in the United States. Something as small as $10 in the DR has a noticeable increase in value. If you escalated your $10 into $100 or $1,000, think about how much your money could stretch!

A Life Worth Living

If you’re in the market for a good vacation home, consider using the cost of living in the Dominican Republic to your advantage. Both the Canadian and US dollars are higher in value than the Dominican Peso, making your retirement income go further. At Casa Linda, we want you to have the best retirement possible. That’s why we recommend taking a look at our cost-friendly villas. With prices starting at only $229K USD, you’ll be able to enjoy your retirement in luxury without breaking the bank.

Each of the villas is fully customizable and comes with your own private on-site pool and parking. To learn more about the benefits of buying with Casa Linda, visit our website.

Why You Should Relocate to the Dominican Republic

Are you ready for a change of scenery? Now is the time to consider relocating abroad! The team at Casa Linda is here to help ensure you know what to expect when living abroad in the Dominican Republic.

Heralded as a dream destination for retirees, young professionals, and entrepreneurs, the Dominican Republic is a fantastic place to retire in style, work from home, or start a new business. Continue reading to learn more about the cost of living in the Dominican Republic and how relocating to the DR can be an economically wise investment.

Your Dollar Can Stretch Further

The cost of living is often the most significant source of stress for potential expats considering relocating abroad. However, the Dominican Republic is affordable (outside your initial moving costs). Over the decades, the DR has worked hard to become one of the most stable tropical destinations for expats looking to live abroad. Regarding finances, the DR has a unique advantage due to this stability and dependability. Many newcomers are excited to learn that living in the DR is more affordable than in their home countries. Some regular expenses you can save on when living in the Dominican Republic are as follows!

Groceries and Dining

Are you tired of your grocery bill climbing to greater heights every trip? You can save some serious cash on your groceries in the Dominican Republic. The cost of an average meal in the DR ranges between 3-5 USD, but for those with more refined tastes, you can expect to spend a little more, about 25 USD, with tips included. Compared to restaurant prices across North America, that’s an incredible deal! So even when you don’t feel like cooking, you can still save money.

This affordability also applies to your grocery bill! In the DR, grocery prices are typically much more affordable than in North American stores. For instance, a family of two will spend about 200 USD a month on groceries (talk about a steal of a deal). Best of all, many of your favourite treats are available in the DR, so you can still enjoy a taste of home while living affordably abroad!

Healthcare

Understanding your future healthcare is a significant concern when looking to live abroad. Fortunately, the Dominican Republic has a world-class healthcare system and state-of-the-art medical facilities. That means you’ll never have to worry about having access to the care you need when it matters most. Moreover, healthcare in the DR is significantly more affordable, and wait times for procedures are also shorter. So when you relocate to the Dominican Republic, you can rest assured knowing that your health will be cared for without breaking the bank.

Housing

One of the challenges expats face when looking to relocate abroad is that some foreign countries are not as welcoming to expats owning property. Purchasing a home abroad can also be a costly endeavour. However, the Dominican Republic is incredibly friendly to foreign investors! At Casa Linda, our team can help you craft the luxury villa of your dreams starting as low as 229,000 USD. With options for incredible amenities such as pools, carports, living walls, terraces, and more, Casa Linda is here to help you find the perfect home abroad! Best of all, each of our villa floorplans is entirely customizable. So when considering relocating to the Dominican Republic, let Casa Linda help welcome you to your new home!

Residency Requirements

When moving abroad, it’s important to be aware of the country’s residency requirements. For the Dominican Republic, visitors are welcome to remain in the country for up to 60 days at a time (extendable to 120 days with a separate application); if you’re planning on staying in the Dominican longer, you’ll need to investigate the current residency requirements, which include:

Residency Visa

Residency visas are obtained from your country of origin and are stamped into your passport. Once received, you will have 6 days to enter the DR and move toward the next step in the process. DO NOT DELAY

Obtain A Provisional Residency

Those wishing to remain in the DR indefinitely must acquire a provisional residency, which permits them to stay in the country for up to 1 year. After the year is over, you may apply for a renewal for up to 4 years in a row.
