Want to Make a New Start? Become a Dominican Republic Resident!

Temporarily living in a foreign country is on many travellers’ bucket lists, but have you ever considered making a permanent switch? If you love hot, tropical weather and a laidback way of life, consider becoming a full-time resident in the Dominican Republic!

The idea may sound daunting, but there are several advantages that come with becoming a resident in the DR, from tax benefits to a lower cost of living. Combined with one of our affordable and luxurious Casa Linda villas to call home, you’ll be living large! Keep reading to learn about some of the benefits of Dominican Republic residency

Your Household Items Are Shipped Tax-Free

One of the most stressful aspects of moving to a new country is going through all the customs protocols. In many countries, you must pay import tax on items you’ve moved from your home, such as furniture and appliances, but you don’t have to worry about that in the DR! If you obtain your residency before you ship, you’re exempt from customs duties. Not only will this make moving to the DR cheaper, but it will also help reduce the stress brought on by travel and relocation.

You Don’t Need to Give Up Your Home Residency

Are you not ready to cut ties with your homeland? You don’t have to! If you want to hold on to your native citizenship, you can still become a DR local. The Dominican Republic fully recognizes dual citizenship, allowing you to have two countries to call home. If you want to live in the Dominican for half of the year and return home for the remainder, with dual citizenship, you can do so with ease!

You’ll Experience Luxury at a Low Cost

Everyone is searching for that “good” life, but it usually comes at a hefty price- literally. Having a house with a private pool and a terrace overlooking the ocean is virtually impossible for most North American incomes, but at Casa Linda, you can achieve the “good” life at half the cost!

Our luxury villas offer a resort-like lifestyle; each home has its own pool, and our community amenities include dining, entertainment, and even transport to and from the town of Cabarete.

While you don’t have to be a permanent DR resident to enjoy life at Casa Linda, why not go all the way? Obtaining your citizenship will help you fully immerse yourself in the Dominican Republic culture, allowing you to live “Life Tranquilo” with a luxurious villa to beat!

Keep reading to learn more!

Getting Your DR Residency

In the Dominican Republic, tourists can legally spend up to 60 days (extendable to 120 days) in the country. However, if you plan on spending more time in the DR, obtaining your legal residency status is best. To do so, there are some essential documents you will need to provide to the DR’s government to prove that you can sustain yourself, are in good health, and do not have a criminal record. These documents include the following:

  • Bank statements for the last three months.
  • Two frontal photos
  • Lab Test and a letter from your doctor
  • Birth certificate
  • Certificate of good conduct from the police
  • Copy of your valid passport
  • Specific documentation related to your visa category (work, retirement, investment, married to a Dominican or a resident)

Suppose you are facing challenges obtaining these documents or the DR’s residency requirements. In that case, the DR consulate in your home country can assist you with your residency application. Or, the team at Casa Linda can recommend several quality law firms specializing in the immigration process.

First, Obtain a Residency Visa

Once you have your documents in order, the first step you’ll need to take to enter the Dominican Republic is obtaining a residency visa. This visa can be granted from your country of origin and is then stamped into your passport. Once you have this visa, you have 6-days to enter the DR and start the next phase of your residency process.

Provisional Residency Leading to Permanent Residency

The next step for expats to stay in the Dominican Republic indefinitely is obtaining their provisional residency. This residency classification is for folks looking to reside or work in the DR for up to one year. After that first year, you can apply for a renewal up to 4 years in a row. Finally, once you have lived in the DR for four years, you may then continue with an application for permanent residency (PR) status.
