How to Downsize: Moving to a Villa in the Dominican Republic

Aug 12, 2024 | Expat Life, News, Relocating to the Dominican Republic

Your Casa Linda Villa in the Dominican Republic is waiting for you! Taking the plunge and becoming an ex-pat is a thrilling experience, but at Casa Linda, we understand it can also be daunting when you have a whole house of items to sort through.

Moving abroad makes downsizing your current home or apartment essential, as you don’t want to be hit with massive shipping fees for all your furniture, books, and whatnot!

We’ve listed a few tips for downsizing your belongings to make moving to your new villa that much easier, so keep reading to learn more!

Start Early

As you approach the move-in date of your custom Casa Linda villa, you want to ensure you’re fully prepared to fly off to the Dominican!

After finalizing your move to the DR, begin the downsizing process as soon as possible. Selling large furniture items, securing a storage unit for other belongings, and packing everything you’re taking with you will take time!

To stay organized, make a detailed list of everything you own and sort everything by category. Breaking up your items by kitchen, bedroom, living room, etc, will help you better understand which things you need and use and which you don’t.

Get Rid of Excess

After sorting everything into categories, create a pile for items you don’t use, don’t need, or have multiples of. Throw out any scraps or trash that’s gathered in your closet, such as old flyers, take-out menus, unused/ outdated electronics and cords, and other miscellaneous items that are taking up unnecessary space in your home.

Follow this basic rule: if you don’t use it, you don’t need it!

Shed Your Winter Wardrobe!

If you’re permanently moving to the Dominican Republic, you can say goodbye to long, cold winters – and so can your closet!

Sell, donate, or give away those heavy winter coats, scarves, mitts, and boots, and sort through any other clothing items that aren’t suited to a tropical climate.

If you plan on returning home to visit every now and then, you might decide to keep one set of winter items, but you’ll need to make room for the swimsuits, shorts, and t-shirts you’ll be wearing all year round in the DR!

Sell Large Furniture Pieces

Paying to ship large items like couches, bedframes, and other furniture can cost a pretty penny, especially when moving halfway across the world! Rather than endure those high costs, it may be more practical to part with most of your furniture and buy new items when you arrive in the Dominican.

Purchasing locally will ensure you have furniture suited to a hot, damp climate and will also give you an opportunity to embrace Caribbean-style trends in your villa’s decor!

If you have a few items you can’t bear to part with and you’re planning to return home at some point, you can also consider purchasing a storage unit.
