Revealing the Daily Life of Retirement in the Dominican Republic

Revealing the Daily Life of Retirement in the Dominican Republic

It can be daunting for those looking to retire in the Dominican Republic to make the first step. Life in the tropics can seem so different from what so many are used to—how do you begin to picture it? We’re here to help. Uncover the details with us at Casa Linda, as we delve into what your daily life could look like—and why now is the best time to step into paradise. Read on!

8:00 am — Coffee and Sunshine by the Pool

You hear soft bird calls first, then feel the soft warmth on your skin, as the sunlight streams through the curtains. “Another day in paradise,” you think, as you get up from bed and shuffle over into the kitchen to make your morning coffee. Once it’s finished, you take your cup and head outside to your patio. The wind rustles the nearby palm trees as you sip while reading a book in your lawn chair.

11:30 am — A Delicious Lunch with Fresh Flavors

Next, you walk over to Castaway’s Clubhouse & Eatery for a quick bite to eat. Once there, you’re quickly seated at a table and brought a menu by your smiling server. The menu you’re handed features global fare, like Mahi Mahi Ceviche and Churrasco. You take a moment to decide, but ultimately end up settling on the Caprese Salad and a classic mojito to drink—crisp, refreshing, and simple! Just like retiring in the Dominican Republic!

1:00 pm — A Quick Afternoon Siesta

After a filling lunch, you make your way back home. Once you arrive back, you slowly feel your eyelids get heavier. You check your watch. It’s 1 pm—the perfect time for a siesta. Time slows as you stretch onto your couch, close your eyes, and drift off into a peaceful rest.

You feel completely re-energized as you wake up and decide it’s time to head out once again. You grab your beach bag, packed with a beach towel, sunscreen, sun hat, and swimsuit. After making your way to the Casa Linda shuttle, you’re then chauffeured to the beach.

3:00 pm — Sunbathing at Cabarete Beach

You exit the shuttle at Cabarete Beach, where you’re greeted by the melodic sound of waves crashing onto the shore and seagull calls. The moment your toes sink into the sand, you instantly feel at peace. You make your way to a shady spot and lay your beach towel out. “Time to lounge and relax, with absolutely nothing on my agenda,” you think to yourself happily.

6:00 pm — Drinks and Live Music

After a few hours, you eventually pack up your things and head over to one of the many bars that line the beach. There, you order a piña colada, and sit as you watch the golden sunset crest over the beach. Tonight, a live band is playing a smooth, rhythmic bachata song. Several couples are dancing together, as the music flows into the balmy, moonlit night.

You sip and reflect on your day, realizing this is why you chose to retire in the Dominican Republic. You’ve never felt more at peace.

Why Retirement in the Caribbean is Calling Your Name!

Why Retirement in the Caribbean is Calling Your Name!

Retirement is approaching—let the good times roll! After all your hard work over the years, you get to enjoy your well-earned free time any way that you choose. If you have a zest for travel or want a change of scenery, take a big leap by retiring to the Dominican Republic from the US!

While the idea of moving to a foreign country in your golden years may feel a bit daunting, here are a few reasons why the DR is an idyllic retirement destination and how you can make your home here with Casa Linda!

Low Cost of Living

The high cost of living in the United States can be a stressor for new retirees who are relying on their pension and savings for income. Whether you choose to age in place or move to a retirement home, the high cost of groceries, utilities, transport, and more can really add up. The cost of living in the Dominican Republic, however, is 69% cheaper than in your home country!

In the DR, a single person can comfortably live on $800 to $1,200 per month! Activities like dining out and attending events can be enjoyed regularly, and you can shop for healthy, fresh, organic foods in the market without breaking your budget.

Tax Benefits

If you’re of retirement age, you may be entitled to certain tax breaks as an American retiree! Property owners 65 and older who own one property and use it as their primary residence are exempt from paying Real Estate Property Tax. In other words, your Casa Linda villa will be property tax-free!

Your social security and pensions are also not taxable in the DR, allowing you to enjoy even more of your hard-earned money.

(Note that there is no tax treaty between the United States and the Dominican Republic, which may require you to pay taxes for financial investments, stocks, etc, in both countries. Work with a financial advisor to learn your tax implications as a US citizen taking up residence in the DR.)

Accessible Healthcare

The Dominican Republic has an excellent healthcare system that is very affordable! There are several reputable clinics in Cabarete, Sosua, and Puerto Plata where you can receive top-notch care.

If you’re an army veteran, your healthcare benefits are fully transferable to the DR, allowing you to get treatments like chiropractic, massage therapy, psychotherapy, and more covered by the US government!

Simple Visa Application Process

Retiring to the Dominican Republic from the US requires a Visa, and fortunately, the application process is fairly simple, especially for retirees!

As a retired individual, you can skip the usual temporary residency status and apply for permanent residency, as long as you can prove access to a monthly pension of $1,500 per month. The earliest you can be approved is within 45 days of your application!

(You can find more information on how to move to the DR by visiting our Residency page.)

Resort-Style Amenities in a Community of Expats

Many retirees like the idea of a retirement home for the amenities, but don’t love the reality of apartment-style living, lack of privacy, and high monthly fees. At Casa Linda, you get access to amenities without sacrificing your personal space!

Purchasing a villa in our closed community provides a private home, a fully landscaped yard, and your very own inground pool. All of our residents get access to community amenities, from housekeeping to yard maintenance.

Once you choose from one of our floor plans, you can customize it to suit your needs, including age-in-place features like wheelchair ramps, handrails, shower rails, raised dishwashers, widened entryways, and more. We also have 24-hour security throughout our community, so your loved ones back home can rest assured that your safety is our priority!
