How to Set Up Your Villa for Retirement & Aging in Place

If you’re planning for your upcoming retirement, why not take your well-deserved rest with an ocean view? Many North American retirees are embracing “life Tranquilo” in the Dominican Republic, enjoying their golden years in the sun, sand, and surf!

We have many expatriate retirees in our community at Casa Linda who feel the move was well worth the effort! Below, we’ll discuss the benefits of retiring to the Dominican Republic from Canada or the US, the resources available, and how you can alter your Casa Linda villa to suit your needs for elder care, aging in place, and more.

Why the DR is Becoming the Go-To Retirement Destination

Many people dream of spending their retirement years in paradise, and it’s more accessible than you might think. The Dominican Republic offers more than sandy beaches and warm weather; it also offers many practical lifestyle upgrades.

A major draw is the DR’s affordable cost of living, which is 51.1% lower than in Canada. In addition to covering all your basic life expenses, many people can enjoy regular recreation and entertainment without their bank balance going into the red.

Our government is eager to welcome North Americans as expatriates and investors. To encourage more retirees and foreign property purchases, certain tax incentives are also available, including exemption from income tax, property transfer tax, and customs duties, as well as a 50% exemption from property tax.

Are you a U.S. Army veteran? Retired vets can seamlessly transfer their pension from the US to the DR without a hitch! There are also many support groups and programs available for US veterans through the Foreign Medical Program.

There are plenty of reasons why the DR is calling your name. So, what are you waiting for?

How to Set Up Your Casa Linda Villa for Aging in Place

If you plan to retire to the DR, skip the retirement home and opt for your very own luxury villa in the Casa Linda Community! At Casa Linda, we aim to combine the best parts of resort-style living and private homeownership, giving our residents the perfect blend of luxury and independence.

All of our villa floor plans are customizable and can be modified to include age-in-place features and secondary suites to accommodate your family’s plans for your retirement. Many of our additions can be incorporated into your initial design or installed later on.

Here are a few ways you can alter your floor plan during the design process:

Customizations for limited mobility: If you experience limited sight or mobility, we can incorporate several features to simplify and enhance the safety of navigating your home. Some common requests include handrails, shower rails, raised dishwashers, wheelchair ramps, and widened entryways.

Extra space for family members and caregivers: Many of our floor plans can accommodate up to 5 bedrooms, ensuring you have ample space for relatives or caregivers providing elder assistance.

In-law suites for aging parents: Packing your spouse, kids, and parents off to the tropics? If your elder parents or in-laws want to join your Dominican retreat but would prefer their own space, forget the extra bedroom and add a guest house to your villa property for just $44,000 USD!

Whatever your retirement plan, our team at Casa Linda will help you create a floor plan that accommodates your needs so you can enter retirement hassle-free!

Why Retirement in the Caribbean is Calling Your Name!

Why Retirement in the Caribbean is Calling Your Name!

Retirement is approaching—let the good times roll! After all your hard work over the years, you get to enjoy your well-earned free time any way that you choose. If you have a zest for travel or want a change of scenery, take a big leap by retiring to the Dominican Republic from the US!

While the idea of moving to a foreign country in your golden years may feel a bit daunting, here are a few reasons why the DR is an idyllic retirement destination and how you can make your home here with Casa Linda!

Low Cost of Living

The high cost of living in the United States can be a stressor for new retirees who are relying on their pension and savings for income. Whether you choose to age in place or move to a retirement home, the high cost of groceries, utilities, transport, and more can really add up. The cost of living in the Dominican Republic, however, is 69% cheaper than in your home country!

In the DR, a single person can comfortably live on $800 to $1,200 per month! Activities like dining out and attending events can be enjoyed regularly, and you can shop for healthy, fresh, organic foods in the market without breaking your budget.

Tax Benefits

If you’re of retirement age, you may be entitled to certain tax breaks as an American retiree! Property owners 65 and older who own one property and use it as their primary residence are exempt from paying Real Estate Property Tax. In other words, your Casa Linda villa will be property tax-free!

Your social security and pensions are also not taxable in the DR, allowing you to enjoy even more of your hard-earned money.

(Note that there is no tax treaty between the United States and the Dominican Republic, which may require you to pay taxes for financial investments, stocks, etc, in both countries. Work with a financial advisor to learn your tax implications as a US citizen taking up residence in the DR.)

Accessible Healthcare

The Dominican Republic has an excellent healthcare system that is very affordable! There are several reputable clinics in Cabarete, Sosua, and Puerto Plata where you can receive top-notch care.

If you’re an army veteran, your healthcare benefits are fully transferable to the DR, allowing you to get treatments like chiropractic, massage therapy, psychotherapy, and more covered by the US government!

Simple Visa Application Process

Retiring to the Dominican Republic from the US requires a Visa, and fortunately, the application process is fairly simple, especially for retirees!

As a retired individual, you can skip the usual temporary residency status and apply for permanent residency, as long as you can prove access to a monthly pension of $1,500 per month. The earliest you can be approved is within 45 days of your application!

(You can find more information on how to move to the DR by visiting our Residency page.)

Resort-Style Amenities in a Community of Expats

Many retirees like the idea of a retirement home for the amenities, but don’t love the reality of apartment-style living, lack of privacy, and high monthly fees. At Casa Linda, you get access to amenities without sacrificing your personal space!

Purchasing a villa in our closed community provides a private home, a fully landscaped yard, and your very own inground pool. All of our residents get access to community amenities, from housekeeping to yard maintenance.

Once you choose from one of our floor plans, you can customize it to suit your needs, including age-in-place features like wheelchair ramps, handrails, shower rails, raised dishwashers, widened entryways, and more. We also have 24-hour security throughout our community, so your loved ones back home can rest assured that your safety is our priority!
