Get Your Dominican Republic Retirement Visa and Live Up the Golden Years

A lot of preparation goes into retirement, especially if you plan to retire in a foreign country. If you’re considering making your new home in the Dominican Republic, we’re excited to welcome you to our little slice of paradise! To ensure your move is smooth sailing, it’s essential to have all your legal affairs in order, like obtaining a valid Dominican Republic Retirement Visa.

Once your papers are in order (and your Casa Linda villa is ready for you to move in), you can begin the next chapter of your life with an ocean view! Keep reading to learn your options for a retirement visa and a few benefits set aside for North American retirees in the DR.

Why the DR is Your Go-To Retirement Destination

So, why should you choose the Dominican Republic as your retirement plan? If you want to spend your days lazing on warm, sunny beaches, eating delicious food, sampling vibrant Caribbean culture, and embracing “Life Tranquilo,” you’ll slide into your retired life with ease!

In addition to the sun, sand, and surf, the DR offers a lot of practical benefits that can allow retirees to enjoy life to the fullest. Our low cost of living is a major draw for North American expats, estimated at around 60-70% cheaper than in the United States. You can also obtain accessible private healthcare, which averages around $1,600/year for a couple.

These low living costs enable pensions, Social Security, and savings to last significantly longer than they would in a more expensive country, allowing you to incorporate high-quality groceries, recreation, and entertainment into your regular budget.

Benefits for North American Retirees in the DR

The Dominican Republic government highly encourages Canadians and Americans to visit, live, and purchase property on our island. As a retiree, you may be eligible for certain incentives and benefits. These include:

  • Income tax exemption for interest, dividends, pensions, and annuity income
  • 50% capital gains tax exemption

Revealing the Daily Life of Retirement in the Dominican Republic

Revealing the Daily Life of Retirement in the Dominican Republic

It can be daunting for those looking to retire in the Dominican Republic to make the first step. Life in the tropics can seem so different from what so many are used to—how do you begin to picture it? We’re here to help. Uncover the details with us at Casa Linda, as we delve into what your daily life could look like—and why now is the best time to step into paradise. Read on!

8:00 am — Coffee and Sunshine by the Pool

You hear soft bird calls first, then feel the soft warmth on your skin, as the sunlight streams through the curtains. “Another day in paradise,” you think, as you get up from bed and shuffle over into the kitchen to make your morning coffee. Once it’s finished, you take your cup and head outside to your patio. The wind rustles the nearby palm trees as you sip while reading a book in your lawn chair.

11:30 am — A Delicious Lunch with Fresh Flavors

Next, you walk over to Castaway’s Clubhouse & Eatery for a quick bite to eat. Once there, you’re quickly seated at a table and brought a menu by your smiling server. The menu you’re handed features global fare, like Mahi Mahi Ceviche and Churrasco. You take a moment to decide, but ultimately end up settling on the Caprese Salad and a classic mojito to drink—crisp, refreshing, and simple! Just like retiring in the Dominican Republic!

1:00 pm — A Quick Afternoon Siesta

After a filling lunch, you make your way back home. Once you arrive back, you slowly feel your eyelids get heavier. You check your watch. It’s 1 pm—the perfect time for a siesta. Time slows as you stretch onto your couch, close your eyes, and drift off into a peaceful rest.

You feel completely re-energized as you wake up and decide it’s time to head out once again. You grab your beach bag, packed with a beach towel, sunscreen, sun hat, and swimsuit. After making your way to the Casa Linda shuttle, you’re then chauffeured to the beach.

3:00 pm — Sunbathing at Cabarete Beach

You exit the shuttle at Cabarete Beach, where you’re greeted by the melodic sound of waves crashing onto the shore and seagull calls. The moment your toes sink into the sand, you instantly feel at peace. You make your way to a shady spot and lay your beach towel out. “Time to lounge and relax, with absolutely nothing on my agenda,” you think to yourself happily.

6:00 pm — Drinks and Live Music

After a few hours, you eventually pack up your things and head over to one of the many bars that line the beach. There, you order a piña colada, and sit as you watch the golden sunset crest over the beach. Tonight, a live band is playing a smooth, rhythmic bachata song. Several couples are dancing together, as the music flows into the balmy, moonlit night.

You sip and reflect on your day, realizing this is why you chose to retire in the Dominican Republic. You’ve never felt more at peace.

Enjoy Active Golden Years—Retire to the Dominican Republic!

You’ve made it to retirement. Let the good times roll! You can make these years fun-loving and memorable by retiring to a warm, beautiful paradise like the Dominican Republic, ready to welcome you with open arms. You can spend your days sipping fruity drinks along the beach, getting to know the local culture, and embracing your newfound free time in luxury!

The DR offers more than a permanent vacation—it’s also an excellent place for older adults to stay fit and healthy! The DR offers access to mental and physical health resources, healthy foods, and endless methods for staying active. Keep reading to learn how you can embrace good health in the Caribbean and retire to the Dominican Republic with a stylish villa to call home!

Why Staying Active in Retirement Matters

Getting older makes taking charge of your health even more important, and seniors who stay active benefit both their physical and mental health!

Maintaining regular physical activity can help improve cardiovascular health and strengthen muscles and bones, lowering the risk of falls and resulting injuries.

Regular activity can also improve seniors’ cognitive ability, strengthening their memory, problem-solving skills, and attention. This allows retirees to get the most out of their golden years and enjoy their well-earned free time!

However, staying active all year round can be a challenge in colder parts of the world. Not only is the weather bad, but the lack of sun and winter doldrums can make it hard to get motivated.

But in the Dominican Republic, you don’t need to worry about the winter blues (unless you’re talking about our blue skies and sea)!  The weather in paradise makes embracing regular exercise and activity much easier. You don’t need to worry about bundling up in winter gear just to go for a walk—nothing but shorts, sandals, and sunglasses here!

How the Dominican Republic Supports an Active Lifestyle

The DR is one of the easiest places to stay active! The warm weather and constant sunshine make outdoor activities fun and accessible, and there’s plenty to choose from. Depending on your level of mobility, you can enjoy anything from walks along the beach to watersports, not just in the summer but year-round!

If you’re not big on sports or are intimidated by leaping into a regular exercise routine, you can get your activity in other ways, like taking the many walking tours offered in Cabarete, Sosua, and Puerta Plata. Enjoy taking in the scenery and historical sights while getting your 10K steps!

The DR also provides access to the same health resources that you get in Canada and the US. If you struggle with mobility, you can sign up for physiotherapy. If you’re a retired US Army veteran, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) allows you to use your health benefits for these types of services!

Enjoy a Healthy Life in “Tranquilo”

The Dominican Republic is the ideal setting for retirees. Not only are you in your carefree years but you’re also surrounded by a community and culture that embraces relaxation and slow living!

DR locals’ philosophy is to live “tranquilo,” to slow down and enjoy the moment rather than let a clock run your life. This slower pace of life will give you plenty of space and time to prioritize your health and well-being.
