The hardest part of visiting the Caribbean is always the flight home. But what if you never had to leave? The Dominican Republic offers one of the fastest and most seamless paths to residency in the Caribbean. While there are standard paths to residency, the DR also offers three fast-tracked paths! This includes a rentista pathway, a pensiado pathway, and the investor pathway.

In this brief blog with Casa Linda, let’s explore these processes together and what you need to know before applying. Read on!

What Do You Need Before Applying?

Before packing your sunglasses and flip-flops, you’ll first need to apply for a temporary visa as your first step toward Dominican Republic residency. Please note that a temporary visa is different from temporary residency, which is what you’ll apply for once in the DR. You’ll need to gather important documents and forms, then submit them to your country’s Dominican Republic embassy.

These documents typical include: 

  • Birth certificate
  • Proof of income (bank statements, pensions, investments)
  • Police background check
  • Marriage certificate (if married)

Once your documents are submitted to the embassy, you’ll receive your temporary visa, which will allow you to enter the country. You’ll also receive your documents back, which you’ll need to bring with you for the next part of the process. Depending on which fast-track residency pathway you choose, you’ll have different requirements for each. Please read over each section carefully to ensure you meet the requirements.

#1: The Rentista Pathway

If you’ve always wanted to spend your next chapter in a tropical paradise, the Dominican Republic makes it easy with the rentista visa. To qualify for this visa, you’ll need to make at least $2,000 USD per month from passive or investment income. This generally includes rental income, dividends, bonds, or any other recurring income.

#2: The Pensiado Pathway

The Dominican Republic warmly welcomes applicants with pensions. In order to qualify for this visa, you’ll need to have a pension of at least $1,500 USD per month. If you have any dependents, you’ll also need an additional $250 USD every month per dependent. This income must be from a pension, including retirement, military, or other government pensions.

#3: The Investor Pathway

The investor visa is designed for individuals seeking to invest in the Dominican Republic through real estate, business, or other approved means. As a result, this visa requires an investment of at least $200,000 USD. This can take the form of tourism developments, franchise investments, financial contributions, or other types of investments. The investment must be legal and verifiable.

Enter the Dominican Republic

Once you have your temporary visa and your affairs in order, it’s time to make your way to the Dominican Republic! Please note that you’ll only have 60 days to enter the country, so you’ll need to ensure everything is prepared ahead of time. This includes packing your belongings, having set housing plans in place after arrival, and ensuring that you have all your necessary documents.

Once in the Dominican Republic, you’ll need to apply for your temporary residency card. To do so, you’ll complete a medical exam and submit your application and documents to the Dirección General de Migración in Santo Domingo. For more information, check out their website.
