Build Your Best Life

on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic

Veterans from both the United States and Canada are choosing the North Coast of the Dominican Republic as their next chapter in life. Sunshine, a lower cost of living, strong medical support, and a growing veteran community make it one of the most practical and rewarding places to relocate or retire.

Casa Linda gives veterans an easy, comfortable, and secure way to live in the Caribbean with all the support they need.

why is the dominican republic such a great place for veterans?
Veterans Dining on beach
cost of living

Life on the North Coast is easier on a veteran’s wallet for reasons that have nothing to do with cutting corners; it’s simply a place where your money goes further without sacrificing quality of life.

Veterans feel the difference fast. Daily living isn’t padded with endless fees, surprise add-ons, or the “death by a thousand bills” feeling you get in North America. Groceries, dining out, household services, property taxes, and even healthcare hit the budget at a fraction of what you’re used to. The result is a kind of financial breathing room most veterans haven’t experienced since their early service days.

Everyday life is simply less expensive:
• Eating out doesn’t feel like a splurge.
• Fuel and transportation cost less.
• Household help is affordable enough to actually give you your time back.
• Activities — from water sports to gym memberships to golf — cost a fraction of North American prices.

Lower expenses mean your fixed income stretches years longer. Your pension, disability, or retirement savings stop feeling tight. You live better, not smaller.

Veteran-Friendly Medical Support

For U.S. Veterans:
The Dominican Republic has clinics that work with the VA Foreign Medical Program (FMP) for treatment of service-connected conditions. You can get care here, submit documentation, and receive reimbursement depending on your eligibility.  Click here to learn more.

For Canadian Veterans:
Canadian veterans may be eligible for VAC (Veterans Affairs Canada) benefits—including disability support, treatment benefits, and some coverage for medical services abroad.

General Medical Care

The Dominican Republic, and the North Coast in particular, offers outstanding, first-world medical care with modern hospitals and well-trained doctors.  Medical insurance is very reasonably priced.

perpetual summer
perpetual summer

A climate that’s actually good for the body.
Cold weather is brutal on joints, injuries, old fractures, and chronic pain (and vets often carry more than their share of those). The DR’s warm, steady climate gives daily relief. It’s the kind of physical comfort pain meds try (and fail) to replicate.

Sunlight lifts mood and energy.
There’s a biochemical truth here: steady natural light boosts serotonin and regulates sleep cycles. Veterans dealing with seasonal depression, sleep disruption, or anxiety feel real, measurable improvement. You can’t fake the impact of morning sun on the nervous system.

Say “NO” to snow and cold
We always say that the only good ice is in your drink!  In the DR you get 12-months of near perfect weather with average temps of 82.4°F (28°C) all year long, with no hurricanes on the North Coast!

Ladies playing game
active, welcoming community

Casa Linda is filled with long-term residents who aren’t just passing through, they’ve chosen this community because it offers stability, respect, and a sense of belonging. Many are retired military, law enforcement, or seasoned travelers who know the value of structure and reliability.

It’s the kind of environment where you can ease into civilian life abroad without feeling like the “new person in town.” Social gatherings feel natural, conversations are easy, and friendships form quickly because the community attracts people with similar values. For veterans, it’s one of the smoothest social transitions you’ll find-familiar enough to feel comfortable, yet relaxed enough to feel like a well-earned fresh start.

sosua beach
beautiful beaches

The beaches on the North Coast varied – each with its own personality.

Sosúa Bay feels like a protected cove: calm, clear, warm water that stays around 28°C (about 82°F). It’s the kind of place where you can actually relax in the ocean, float on your back, snorkel with tropical fish, or just sit waist-deep and let the stress drain out. The bay’s natural curve blocks big waves, so it’s accessible even if you’re not the strongest swimmer or if you’re working with old injuries.

Cabarete Beach is the opposite energy:  long, wide, breezy, and one of the best water-sports beaches in the world. Veterans who love activity gravitate here. You can walk for miles, pick up paddleboarding, dive into kiteboarding, have lunch with your feet in the sand, or sit under a palm tree with a cold Presidente and watch the world go by. Even if you never touch a kite, there’s something addictive about the constant movement of the place.

Then you have Encuentro: the surf beach. It’s wild in the right way: clean waves, open ocean, a small cluster of surf schools, and an early-morning vibe that feels almost meditative. Plenty of people come just to watch the sunrise and sip coffee while surfers carve through warm water.

Smaller beaches: Playa Alicia, Playa Chiquita, Playa Laguna — offer quiet, postcard-perfect corners where you can read a book, swim privately, or enjoy an afternoon without crowds. They’re little gems scattered along the coast, and locals treat them like secret spots.

Veterans golfing
unlimited activities

The North Coast gives you far more to do than just beaches and sports, it’s a place where every day can feel different if you want it to. You can wander local markets, or spend an afternoon drifting between seaside restaurants in Cabarete. There are cooking classes, language lessons, live music nights, craft fairs, cigar lounges, and yoga sessions overlooking the ocean.

If you like cultural experiences, there’s no shortage of Dominican festivals, concerts, baseball, and community gatherings. Nature lovers can head to waterfalls, horseback riding, hiking trails, or guided eco-tours through lush countryside. For something slower, you can book a spa day, visit chocolate or rum factories, or join one of the many social groups or charity projects run by expats and locals.

Whether you want adventure, creativity, culture, relaxation, or simple everyday fun, the North Coast gives you a huge range of activities—enough to keep life interesting!
